Quick answer
A bad credit business loan is finance for a business whose owner or company has defaults, judgments, missed payments, ATO debt or a past insolvency on record. Specialist and private lenders weigh current trading, bank statements and especially property security more heavily than the credit score. Each file is considered case by case, and a clear explanation of what went wrong carries real weight.
Key points
- A credit blemish narrows the field of lenders but rarely closes it.
- Defaults stay on a credit report for five years, or seven for a clearout, even once paid.
- Property security is the single biggest factor in getting a bad credit loan approved.
- Current trading and a credible explanation matter more than old history.
- Considered
- Defaults, judgments, ATO debt
- Assessed on
- Trading, security, explanation
- Unsecured options
- Typically $5k – $500k
- Property-secured
- $20k – $5m
Bad credit doesn’t mean no business loan. It means the lender relies less on your credit score and more on everything else: how the business is trading today, what security is available, and whether there’s a believable explanation for what went wrong. Major banks tend to step back at the first default, but specialist and private lenders assess these files every day, case by case.
What counts as bad credit for a business loan?
Lenders look at the credit files of the business and of the people behind it (directors, guarantors, the sole trader). Any of these will mark a file:
- Defaults on loans, phone plans, utilities or trade accounts
- Court judgments and writs
- Repayment history showing missed or late payments
- Many recent credit enquiries in a short space of time
- Business tax debts the ATO has disclosed to a credit reporting bureau, one of the firmer actions the ATO can take
- Personal insolvency, including bankruptcy, debt agreements and personal insolvency agreements, which appear on the National Personal Insolvency Index that AFSA’s Bankruptcy Register Search covers
- Company insolvency, such as a previous company that went into liquidation
Not all marks weigh the same. One paid telco default from four years ago barely registers with a specialist lender; three unpaid finance defaults from last year is a different conversation.
How long do problems stay on your file?
According to Moneysmart, a default stays on your credit report for five years, or seven years for a clearout. Paying it doesn’t remove it, but the listing is updated to show it’s been paid. You can get a free copy of your report every three months, and it’s worth getting one from both major bureaus before you apply, so nothing surprises you or the lender.
If something on your file is wrong, you can ask the credit reporting body to correct it at no cost.
What do lenders weigh instead of your credit score?
| Factor | Why it matters with bad credit |
|---|---|
| Property security | The biggest single lever. A first or second mortgage or caveat over property lets the lender rely on the asset rather than the file. |
| Current trading | Six to twelve months of healthy bank statements show the problem is behind you. |
| The explanation | A divorce, illness, a customer collapse or the pandemic reads very differently from repeated non-payment. Put it in writing. |
| What’s been fixed | Paid defaults, a payment plan kept on time, lodgements up to date. |
| Loan purpose | Clearing debts, refinancing or buying equipment that earns income all tell a stronger story. |
| Amount and term | A modest, short loan is easier to approve than a large, long one. |
With property behind it, a bad credit business loan can range from $20k to $5m as a first mortgage, second mortgage or caveat loan. Without property, unsecured options for trading businesses typically run from $5k to $500k, but the credit file carries more weight and offers tend to be smaller.
If your trading has recovered even if your file hasn’t, a short enquiry is the easiest way to find out what’s realistic.
Secured or unsecured with bad credit?
Most of the flexibility in bad credit lending sits on the secured side. A private or specialist lender secured over residential or commercial property is mainly asking two questions: is there enough equity, and how will the loan be repaid at the end? That’s why owners with serious credit damage but good equity often have more options than owners with clean files and no property.
Unsecured lending is still possible for smaller amounts, particularly when bank statements are strong and the blemishes are older or paid. The secured or unsecured tool is a quick way to see which route suits you.
What does a bad credit business loan cost?
Expect it to cost more than a bank loan to a borrower with a perfect file, because the lender is carrying more risk. Exactly how much depends on the business and is never set by a rate card: the security, loan-to-value, trading, the nature of the credit issues, the term and the exit plan all feed into the price. Cost components include:
- interest, and how it’s paid (monthly, or in some secured loans prepaid or capitalised)
- establishment, legal and settlement fees
- any line or account fees
- early repayment terms
The aim is usually to use a specialist loan as a bridge: fix the problem, rebuild the file, and refinance to cheaper finance once the marks age.
Illustrative example
Illustrative example: A family-run landscaping business went through a rough patch two years ago when a major client went under. The owner ended up with two finance defaults, now paid, and an ATO payment plan that has been kept every month since. Trading has fully recovered. The business wants $180k to clear the ATO plan and replace a worn-out excavator. The bank declined. A private lender secured by a second mortgage over the owner’s home approves the loan on the strength of the equity, the recovered bank statements and a short written explanation of what happened. The owner plans to refinance to a mainstream lender once the defaults expire.
Mistakes that make bad credit harder
- Applying everywhere at once. Every application can leave an enquiry on your file, and a cluster of them looks like desperation.
- Hiding the history. It always shows up, and an undisclosed default is worse than a disclosed one.
- Leaving defaults unpaid when you could settle them.
- Letting lodgements slip. Unlodged BAS on top of bad credit is a hard combination; see ATO tax debt loans if tax is part of the picture.
- Paying for “credit repair” to remove correct listings that can’t legally be removed.
Had a rough patch? Let’s look at where you are now
Plenty of good businesses carry a scar or two on their credit file, and we’d much rather hear the real story than a polished one. Our enquiry takes about a minute, and we don’t run a credit check at that first step, so asking won’t add another enquiry to your file. Your details stay with us rather than being fired off to every lender going. A real person reads what happened and what’s changed, then calls you to talk it through. Please be upfront on the form about defaults, ATO debt and property you own; it’s what lets us find a lender who’ll actually say yes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a business loan with a default on my credit file?
Often, yes. Specialist and private lenders regularly lend to businesses with defaults, particularly paid ones or those with a clear cause. The size, age and number of defaults all matter, as does whether property security is available.
How long does a default stay on my credit report?
Moneysmart says a default stays on your report for five years, or seven years for a clearout. Paying it doesn't remove it, but it is then shown as paid, which lenders do look on more favourably.
Can I borrow after bankruptcy?
Once discharged, yes, though options are narrower for a while. Lenders can check the National Personal Insolvency Index through AFSA's Bankruptcy Register Search, so disclose any past bankruptcy or debt agreement up front.
Will enquiring hurt my credit score further?
Not with us. There is no credit check when you first enquire. Any credit check comes later, once you've talked it through and a suitable lender is being considered.
Should I pay a credit repair company to clean my file?
Be cautious. Moneysmart points out that these companies can only ask for incorrect information to be removed, which you can request yourself for free. Correct listings stay until they expire.
Does ATO debt count as bad credit?
It can if the ATO has disclosed it to a credit reporting bureau, and lenders will see it in your statements either way. ATO debt is considered case by case, and in some cases the loan itself is used to clear it.
